Team Life Cycle Tools
Of all the stages in the Team Life Cycle, teams tend to need the greatest support in Stage 1: Form & Connect, Stage 2: Storm & Clarify, and Stage 5: Dorm & Drift. Our tools guide participants to address the unique challenges at each of these stages.
Form & Connect (i4)
For a team to function as more than the sum of its individual members, it must first recognize, address, and integrate the unique needs and characteristics of those members. In particular, each person must develop clarity on four factors (i4):
1. Identity: Who and what am I to be on this team? How does that fit with my sense of myself?
2. Integration: Where do I fit within this team? Can I make a valuable—and valued—contribution?
3. Influence: What is my level of control and influence within the team? To what degree will I be trusted and respected?
4. Individual goals: How will membership on this team contribute to (or interfere with) addressing my own goals and needs?
Effectively managing identity, integration, influence, and individual goals helps the team not only to clarify team roles and ways of working, but also to build trust and psychological safety.
We highly recommend guiding team members through i4 if they have not done so already, regardless of their current Team Life Cycle stage. Dealing with these issues in Stage 1 (Form & Connect) can go a long way in facilitating the team’s progression through future stages. For teams stuck in Stage 2 (Storm & Clarify), addressing neglected i4 issues can help dissolve long-standing barriers to cohesion and cooperation. And in Stage 3, awareness of i4 can aid in the clarification of team processes, norms, and expectations.
This webinar explores the i4 categories in detail, including a variety tools and techniques to help teams to address each one.
